The God who is True.

Truth has become a word that has lost its meaning in our society; It has been stripped of its true connotation. In today’s world, truth has taken the meaning of personal relativity: “what is true for you is true for you”. Which means that anything can be true if you want it to be true, anything can be true if it feels good or right to you. This has certainly caused confusion in our world and in people’s mind because the quest for meaning is still very much what people are all about and you can’t be looking for meaning without wanting to know the truth. I believe this trade of truth for what it is not has made truth look like a lie and a lie look like truth. It reminds me of a prophecy I read recently in the book of Isaiah where God is pronouncing judgement on Israel and its prophets for changing truth and making it look like a lie (Isaiah 9:14-16). The good news here is that in Christ, there is no lie. With God, there is no confusion; Jesus said He is the Way, the Truth and the Life which means that He is real (John 14:6). In the midst of the chaotic world we live in where there seems to be so much confusion, I submit to you to look no further than Jesus. Look to Him who is real, who is true to His words and be set free.

In the bible, we see God as the creator of this beautiful world we live in; we also see Him as the creator of ourselves. Moreover, God is a God who speaks; not only does He speak things into existence, He also ensures His words come to pass. We see this in the many prophecies that God had said that came to pass. For example, God had promised to His people Israel through his servant Moses that if they obeyed Him and His words, they would lack no good thing, they would be flourishing (Deuteronomy 28:1-14). This can be verified in the lives of many patriarchs, but I want to take the case of Hezekiah who was a king of Judah who trusted in the Lord. Being in the time when Israel was split into two kingdoms and perversion was at its peak, to find a king like Hezekiah who trusted in the Lord was courageous and refreshing. We are told in 2 Kings 18 verse 5 that “He trusted in the Lord, the God of Israel, so that there was none like him among all the kings of Judah after him, nor among those who were before him”. This devotion to the Lord brought about the blessings God had promised to the Israelites when they would return to Him. There was peace in Judah during the time of Hezekiah, not only that there were victories as well. You see here that God was true to His Words. He was with Hezekiah in all that He did, protecting Judah from evil and saving Judah mightily from its enemies (2 Kings 18-20).

Another example of God being true to His words can be found in God’s prophecy against Babylon in Isaiah. Indeed, Babylon, the great nation that took the Israel into exile, that nation that was so powerful that it was almost unthinkable that such a nation could or would fall. But God’s word came to pass, Babylon was defeated and wiped out from the face of the earth to the point that we today have no real knowing of the extent of their power back then. Again, you see clearly how God’s words came to pass.

The final example I want to use is the birth of Jesus Christ. Before Mary received the word of God from the angel, a prophecy had already been pronounced regarding Jesus’ birth in Isaiah 9. When Jesus came, not only did He fulfill that Isaiah’s prophecy, but He also fulfilled the words of the angel spoken to Mary. God’s words are true because He is true himself and He is the Truth. Through Jesus, we have the perfect example of what it means to be “a man of your word” – a man that can be trusted because of what he says. It is written in 2 Timothy 13 that even if we are faithless Jesus cannot deny himself because He is faithful. This is how true God is to himself, it is His character, it is Him. Therefore, search for truth in none other than the person of Jesus. He is the personification of Truth because He is Truth. You can trust what He says because His words always come to pass. The fact that He spoke this very world into existence should count for something. He is not a politician whose words are not true; He is not a friend who cannot keep promises for whatever reasons even good or acceptable ones; He is not even like loved ones who promise us things that are not under their control with words such as “everything is going to be ok” thus failing to keep such a promise when things turn the other way. No, Jesus is much more. He is God in the flesh, He is the Way maker, He is the life giver and what He says goes, what He says always come to pass. So, let us trust in that. If anything else, remember His Words because they are true and they will come to pass eventually.
