Inexhaustible God

The idea that God is inexhaustible is one that is certainly true and baffles me all the time. To think that we will be spending eternity getting to know our God forever is truly amazing. In fact, it is not something our mind can even fathom because we are finite beings and we show our limitations in the way we think. One of the clear ways in which we can see the infinite character of God is in our relationship with him. The more we get to know God, the more we realize there is to know. For example, it never ceases to amaze me that no matter how many times you have read a bible passage, or studied one, you always get a fresh and new revelation every time. The word of God is timeless, it transcends our time and seasons as we know them, yet it remains current. It also reminds me of the angels that worship before the throne of God singing “holy, holy, holy” (Revelation 4:8), they do not get tired of elevating God because they get a newer revelation of God every time they worship. We have the privilege of serving an infinite God, therefore let us learn to savour him in our finite mind and realm until we are able to savour him fully in heaven. Today’s post simply seeks to draw our attention to this great God we serve.

God is so spectacular. In everything that he does, there is awe, there is precision, there is thought. Not only that, God is diverse, you cannot put him in a box. When you look at his creation, it does not take you time to wonder at how much creativity is in God, at how much range, at how much expression is in what he creates. It is just mind-blowing. I was thinking about the creation story in Genesis and I couldn’t stop but wonder at the fact that when God created every living creature that moves along the ground or that lives within the water he did not just create one kind but a plethora! I do not even know the tenth of what living creatures live in the sea but when I watch documentaries that reveal the sea life I am speechless and blown away. The same goes for the creation of our galaxy and everything that is in the sky. The book of Job is one book that reveals to me how thoughtful God is when he does something and not only that how much pride he gets from the work of his hands. When Job questioned God and God finally answered with more questions, Job remained speechless, recognized his folly and asked for forgiveness. It’s in God’s detailed questions that we get to see a glimpse of his might (Job 38-41). I don’t know about you but this thought alone should stir your worship and cause you to do what the psalmist commands us to do: bless the Lord and praise his name. The fact that we are created in the image of this magnificent God is simply astonishing. Unfortunately we tarnish his image more than we reflect it. We do not tarnish his image just by sinning but also by failing to live up to the standard of who we are truly. There is so much that the Father has placed in us, we have to redeem every part of who we are, who he has made us to be and live in light of who he is. That includes our mind, our imagination, our work, our time, our attention, etc. these have to be redeemed in order to be used for the glory of God. Our lives should ascribe glory to God.

Another wonderful attribute of God is that he is always doing something more, always thinking ahead of the game, his plans are glorious, “no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9). This is a God who never sleeps nor slumber (Psalm 121:3-4), he is always present, preparing for us a bright future, we only have to wait on him. The verse of the day on the youversion bible app was taken from Isaiah 43 and reads “forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” (Isaiah 43:18-19). There are many encouragements that you can glean from these verses alone but for the purpose of this post, I will only focus on the one that speaks of the infinite character of God. In these verses, we see a God who is always doing something new, he does not stop at just one thing, what he has done in the past he does not want to be defined by just that. We see a God who is new, whose ideas are new and vibrant all the time. We cannot keep up with this God on our own! There are so many facets of God’s character that show his infinity such as being rich in mercy! We know that his mercies are new ever morning; we know he loves us with an everlasting love; we know he never fails to keep his promises. These are all aspects of his inexhaustible self that are displayed in these characteristics.

In all honesty, how can you get enough of this God? Loving God with all our mind, strength and heart should not be a command, it should be the default lifestyle we adopt because our God is an awesome God, he is powerful, he is magnificent, he is glorious, he is holy, he is mighty, he is good and much more. He deserves all the glory, the honour and the praise. We have to give to God what belongs to him (Mark 12:17). We were created for this. I don’t know where you stand when you think about this great God we call our Father, I don’t even know if you call him Father, but I do know that no matter how much you think you know about him, there is always more to know. And if you don’t call him father, know this truth: God has made a way for you to know Him better. He has given us his son Jesus Christ who is the visible image of himself (Colossians 1:15), this Jesus died on the cross for you and I in order to restore the broken relationship between God and us that was tainted by sin. Jesus’ death and resurrection provided the way for us to be adopted into the family of God making us sons and daughters of the Most High God. We went from enemies of God to friends of God. There are perks that come with being a child of God and one of those is having the Holy Spirit of God in you. He is an advocate, a revealer of the things of God, a comforter and a friend. With such an arsenal available, will you press on in your quest to know and serve this great God?
